Representing the famous air-smoothed Bulleid Merchant Navy Pacific, affectionately known as the “Spam Can,” this highly detailed OO gauge locomotive captures 21C4 in its distinctive Southern Railway form. Special attention has been given to the locomotive's modified “widow's peak” front-end streamlining, chimney arrangement and characteristic Bulleid styling.

The highlight is Hornby's factory-installed steam generator system. Using an optical sensor, the system synchronises the steam effect with wheel speed and locomotive chuff rate for an impressively realistic operating experience. Steam is produced using piezo element technology with water, meaning the system operates without a heating element.

Combined with the pre-installed Merchant Navy sound profile, HM7000 digital control and a reservoir providing up to approximately 20 minutes of continuous steam operation, Cunard White Star delivers a compelling combination of movement, sound and visible steam.

History of 21C4 “Cunard White Star”

Built at the Southern Railway's Eastleigh Works in October 1941, Cunard White Star was the fourth member of Oliver Bulleid's radical 30-strong Merchant Navy Class.

Designed for prestigious express passenger duties, the Merchant Navy locomotives incorporated numerous innovative features, including chain-driven valve gear operating in an oil bath, electric lighting, Bulleid-Firth-Brown driving wheels and their unmistakable air-smoothed casing.

Originally numbered 21C4, the locomotive became BR No. 35004 in October 1949 following railway nationalisation. It was rebuilt into conventional form in July 1958 before eventually being withdrawn from Bournemouth in October 1965 and scrapped in 1966.
