The Class 91
A total of 31 Class 91 locomotives were constructed between 1988 and 1991 as part of British Rail's major East Coast electrification programme.
Designed for high-speed express passenger work, the Class 91 became closely associated with InterCity services on the East Coast Main Line.
The locomotives formed part of the InterCity 225 concept, a name referring to the planned 225 km/h (140 mph) service capability of the new trains.
During development, British Rail also used the name “Electra” for the Class 91 project.
With their distinctive streamlined profile, the locomotives became an instantly recognisable part of Britain's modern railway scene.
No. 91018 “Robert Louis Stevenson”
No. 91018 was constructed at BREL Crewe and entered service in 1990.
In November 1993, the locomotive received the name:
Robert Louis Stevenson
The name remained until February 2000, when the locomotive was renamed Bradford Film Festival.
In 2002, modifications resulted in its reclassification as part of the Class 91/1 fleet and it was renumbered 91118.
The locomotive continued operating into the modern railway era before being withdrawn by LNER in May 2020.
Following withdrawal it entered storage and was ultimately scrapped by February 2023.
This Hornby model captures the locomotive during its earlier British Rail InterCity career as 91018 “Robert Louis Stevenson”.
Classic InterCity Livery
The model is presented in the distinctive white and grey British Rail InterCity colour scheme, a livery strongly associated with Britain's express passenger railway of the late 1980s and 1990s.
Its streamlined Class 91 body and classic InterCity presentation make it an excellent choice for recreating an East Coast Main Line express from this important period.
